This week at the headquarters of the Metropolitan Curia in Częstochowa, Archbishop Wacław Depo, the Metropolitan of Częstochowa, met with priest Daniel Galus. The Archdiocese of Częstochowa punished the priest for encouraging his faithful not to wear protective masks and for claiming that there was no epidemic coronavirus. The priest is to go to a six-month retreat and is forbidden to hold priestly functions.
Originally, Fr. Daniel Galus was punished with a canonical rebuke. Archbishop Wacław Depo emphasized that the priest’s statements have nothing to do with the voice of the church, which reminds that “observing the principles of sanitary safety is the fulfillment of the commandment of love through mutual concern for one’s safety”. However, when the clergyman did not follow the rebuke and continued to preach the theses of the so-called anti-Covid, the curia decided to take more decisive steps.
In the communiqué of the Archdiocese of Częstochowa it was emphasized that the clergyman was characterized by “an attitude of disobedience, a lack of reaction to the rebuke given to him and caused by the same confusion and scandal among the faithful.
A clergyman about “persecution and harassment” by the curia
Fr. Daniel Galus is a guide of the Jesus Love and Mercy Community operating in the “Pentecost” Hermitage in Chatachowa near Żarki. After a meeting at the curia, the clergyman issued statementin which he stated, inter alia, that for many years he had been asking the Metropolitan Curia to regulate the status of the Community and to “accept and recommend the activities undertaken”.
The way I was treated at the meeting is part of the pattern of deliberate actions aimed at taking away my voice as a faithful Church, as well as discrediting me and my community. There is no moral or legal basis for the Community and its faithful to be treated in this way, especially in the face of successive unsubstantiated attempts to harass me by superiors in the Curia
– wrote Fr. Gallus.
As he added, “he is convinced that he complied with all orders issued by the Curia, as well as respecting state law.” The clergyman also recognized that “the events that have been happening to him and the Community in the Hermitage in Chatachowa for several dozen days bore the signs of persecution and harassment” and “his service was and is oriented towards doing good and spreading God’s glory”.
“As a priest, I accept with great humility the actions taken by Archbishop Wacław Depo, although I believe that their purpose and legitimacy cannot bring the desired results” – the priest added.
