It was not an easy decision. I will not run for the Commissioner for Human Rights in the next round, said Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz, who had applied for this office three times, on Tuesday. In the parliamentary vote, however, it was rejected by the ruling majority. – It is not about choosing a man who will help us, citizens, in disputes with the state, but about someone who will stick to every decision of the authorities – she assessed on a recording published on social media.
Last week, the Senate rejected the candidacy of the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs proposed by PiS Piotr Wawrzyk for the position of the Ombudsman. This means that the Seym must appoint another person to this position. His opponents in the parliamentary vote were Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz, nominated by the clubs of the Civic Coalition and the Left with the support of Szymon Hołownia’s Polska 2050 movement, and Robert Gwiazdowski, proposed by PSL and the Confederation.
Previously, MEPs had tried twice to elect a new Ombudsman. Each time, the only candidate entered was Rudzińska-Bluszcz. However, PiS did not support her candidacy in the votes.
“I will not run for the next round. I do not want to participate in the theater”
On Tuesday, Rudzińska-Bluszcz published a video on Facebook in which she informed about her decision to apply for this function again.
She noted that “according to the law, the Marshal of the Sejm should now set a deadline for proposing candidates for this position” – In a word, the procedure returns to the starting point. But we already have eight months of experience with the attempt to fill this office – she said.
She admitted that she was “deeply moved by the government’s attitude towards this institution, the institution of the Human Rights Defender”.
– The scale of disregard and demonstrative contempt for this office on the part of the parliamentary majority shows that it is not about choosing a man who will help us citizens in disputes with the state, but about someone who will stick to every decision of the authorities – she continued.
– I get questions whether I will continue my candidacy. It was not an easy decision. I will not run for the next round. I do not want to participate in the theater, which is organized by the election of one of the most important officials in the state – she said. She added that “if the concept of selection changes in the future,” it will be “ready” to take off.
The Ombudsman is appointed by the Sejm with the consent of the Senate at the request of the Marshal of the Sejm or a group of 35 deputies. If the Senate refuses to consent to the appointment of the Ombudsman (it takes one month to adopt a resolution expressing consent or objection), the Sejm will appoint another person to this position. Adam Bodnar’s five-year term in this position expired at the beginning of September 2020, but – in accordance with the Act on the Ombudsman – he remains in office until the appointment of his successor.
