Politicians’ discussion about abortion is an ideological one. I cannot imagine that any of these gentlemen would be able to imagine how difficult it is – said gynecologist from the Bielany hospital, Dr. Anna Parzyńska in “Fakt after Faktach”. As she pointed out, each termination of pregnancy in the case of lethal defects is “the choice of the lesser evil”. – Women expect security, and our country, by changing the law, takes away a large part of this security – commented the obstetrician doctor Grzegorz Południewski.
Last Thursday, the Constitutional Tribunal chaired by Julia Przyłębska ruled that termination of pregnancy in the event of a severe defect of the fetus was unconstitutional. Since then, there have been protests of opponents of this decision on the streets of many Polish cities.
The gynecologist from the Bielany hospital, Dr. Anna Parzyńska and gynecologist, obstetrician Dr. Grzegorz Południewski.
“The possibility of termination of pregnancy is the choice of the lesser evil and the patients are aware of it”
Asked whether the political discussion on abortion is just a substantive one, or is it just an ideological scuffle, Anna Parzyńska said that from her perspective it was an “ideological discussion”. – I cannot imagine that any of these gentlemen would be able to imagine such a situation. As a woman and a doctor, I cannot imagine how difficult it is – she said.
– There is no right decision. The possibility of terminating a pregnancy is the choice of the lesser evil and the patients are aware of it, she said.
Parzyńska said that in the politicians’ debate on abortion she does not see “any humanity and a realistic approach to a woman and her needs, but only a fight in the political and ideological ring”.
“Women expect security, and our country, by changing the law, deprives them of a large part of this security”
When asked about the protests themselves, Dr. Grzegorz Południewski, a gynecologist and obstetrician, noted that “this is the biggest protest that has been launched in this case in Poland and it translates into what women expect from Poland”. – Women expect security, and our country, by changing the law, takes a large part of this security away from them – he said.
– It is a situation when you see not only women but entire families. This is the most important because the issue of freedom in the sphere of decisions [ws. aborcji – red.] it concerns the whole family, not only women – he added.
