Poles must organize themselves with much greater determination to finally chase those who destroy democracy – said Donald Tusk, the head of the European People’s Party in “Yes, it is.” The former prime minister and former head of the European Council spoke, inter alia, about the riots in the seat of the American Congress, pointing out that “everywhere we have our own Capitol somewhere and we must defend this Capitol”. He also said what, in his opinion, could bring success to the Polish opposition in the elections.

Former prime minister, former head of the European Council, and currently chairman of the European People’s Party, Donald Tusk spoke on Friday in “Yes,” on TVN24 about the importance of democracy in the context of last week’s events in Washington. Supporters of outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump sparked riots on Capitol Hill by holding official announcement of presidential election results.

According to Tusk, “the lesson of the Capitol (…) is that we have our own Capitol somewhere somewhere and we need to defend this Capitol.” – If we do not defend democracy, we will be able to blame only ourselves. Not to democracy as a system, but to themselves – he explained.

The former prime minister argued that “democracy is as strong, it is as vital, as those who want to defend it are strong and determined.”

– If we are not able – we Poles, because no one can help us – remove from power those who are ruining democracy today, who are taking away our rights, who made their own farm out of power – very often it is a classic animal farm, like from Orwell [książki George’a Orwella “Folwark zwierzęcy” – przyp. red.] – if we do not show determination, courage and the will to fight to defend it, it means that we deserve this black scenario – he assessed.

According to him, “the viability of democracy is a function of our will to defend democracy.” – It has never been different and it will be no different. That is why I draw one conclusion from the American lesson. Poles must also organize themselves with much greater determination to finally chase those who destroy democracy, said Tusk.

“I will be pleased with the opposition when it wins the election”

The current chairman of the European People’s Party, and once, inter alia, the leader of the Civic Platform, also said that about the Polish opposition. He was asked if he was satisfied with it.

“I will be pleased with the opposition when it wins the election,” he replied. – Some time must pass – because as we know, [do najbliższych wyborów – przyp. red.] it is three more years, if there are no early elections, and in my opinion there is not much evidence of that – he added.

– So these three or two and a half years must be used with the best faith, courage of thinking and determination to organize the entire opposition in such a way that it will be able to defeat PiS in the next elections – said Tusk.

“All these people are surely ready for this fight”

He noted that he did not intend to hold anyone accountable. – It makes much more sense to motivate, help, support all those who have not lost their faith. There are a lot of them in the Platform and in other organizations, but also outside political parties – said the guest of TVN24.

In his opinion, “all these people are surely ready to fight for a better, more democratic future in Poland”. – I will also do my best to help all those who are ready for such a fight – he declared.
