It took several hours to search for a place in a hospital treating COVID-19 patients for an ambulance driver. Although the bed should be formally available, there was no place for it in specialist hospitals on Friday. The sick man is dead.
The deceased for many years was an employee of the Garwolin emergency room. He acted in it as a driver. The 69-year-old was confirmed to be infected with coronavirus and had been in home isolation for several days. – He got sick, he felt bad. An ambulance was called to him on Friday morning. He was taken to the County Hospital in Garwolin – Małgorzata Telmińska, a TVN24 reporter, found out. This hospital is currently a facility with the so-called lowest (first) reference level. – Doctors decided that the patient’s condition is so serious that he should go to a specialist hospital dealing with COVID-19 patients – the reporter added.
“When he needed help himself, unfortunately he did not find it”
Several hours of searching for a facility that would accept a patient in deteriorating condition began. Krzysztof Żochowski, the director of the Garwolin hospital, refused to talk to TVN24 on Sunday. He told the portal egarwolin.pl, which was the first to describe this case, about the search for a place in infectious diseases hospitals in Siedlce and Warsaw.
– Despite the heroic efforts of the ambulance representatives, Meditrans, who called everyone, and our formal and informal efforts, there was nowhere for this patient. In my opinion, we did everything that our hospital could serve such a patient. Unfortunately, the condition was too serious and certain processes could not be reversed – the director told the egarwolin.pl portal.
The man died before midnight on Friday. – I was talking to the dead man’s daughter. She said: Dad helped others for many years, but when he needed help himself, unfortunately he did not find it – emphasized Telmińska.

A spokeswoman for the Masovian Voivode, Ewa Filipowicz, announced that the matter of not admitting an ambulance driver to any of the infectious diseases hospitals would be clarified. – The system of coordination in the situation we are in is being refined all the time. There are more hospitalized patients. A physician-coordinator of emergency medical services works around the clock. He intervenes, helps emergency medical teams, because free places are reported by hospitals. Patients should not be left without help – emphasized Filipowicz.
As she added, the National Health Fund also announced inspections in facilities that refused to admit patients.
Free beds only on paper?
The case of the death of the 69-year-old illustrates the problem that paramedics and doctors have been alerting for some time, which is that beds for patients with COVID-19 should be available.
