In 2002, Archbishop Juliusz Paetz resigned from his duties as Metropolitan of Poznań after accusations of sexual harassment of seminarians that appeared in the media. John Paul II instructed his subordinates to investigate the matter. The Vatican imposed on the Archbishop. Paetz forbidden from incl. administer the sacraments of ordination, confirmation and preaching. The clergyman died in November last year.
About the case of Archbishop Juliusz Paetz spoke last week during a meeting organized by Teatr im. Juliusz Słowacki in Krakow, prof. Tomasz Polak, theologian and former clergyman.
– When I talked to Card. Ratzinger [do 2005 r. prefekt Kongregacji Nauki Wiary – red.] on the situation in Poznań, he gave me such advice that I should write – together with other priests and lay people involved in it – a letter in three copies, and send it to him, to Cardinal Sodano [ówczesny sekretarz stanu Stolicy Apostolskiej – red.] and through the nuncio to the pope [Jana Pawła II – red.] – said prof. Tomasz Polak.
“You have to do it this way, because then those others know that others also know, that is, for example, Cardinal Sodano knows that I know, and I know that Cardinal Sodano knows” – said prof. Cardinal Ratzinger for the Pole.
Tomasz Polak: The point was to blur the matter
– As part of one of my trips to Rome in connection with the case of Archbishop. Paetz, I spoke with the present Cardinal Dziwisz [ówczesny sekretarz Jana Pawła II – red.] and he invited me to dinner at the Pope’s. I was actually there once. Before entering there, he told me: “Not a word about the issues of Poznań’s problems!”
the theologian added.
– I understand it much better. It was really about avoiding any direct reaction, it was going to blur it all out. It did not blur because a person who did not visit the Pope for one dinner transferred information to him – he noted. Information about Archbishop. Eventually, the Pope was to be handed over to the Pope by his long-time friend, Wanda Półtawska.
Stanisław Dziwisz: The welfare of the aggrieved is of paramount importance
In November, TVN24 broadcast the report “Don Stanislao. The other face of Cardinal Dziwisz”, which showed that Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz could take part in covering up the pedophilic acts of Polish and foreign clergy.
In the issued statement, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz stated that the material contains “malicious suggestions and defamatory accusations”, as well as “fragments of unconnected and incompatible matters, episodes that objectively have completely different dynamics”.
“I care about explaining these matters in a transparent manner. It is not about whitewashing or concealing any negligence, but about honestly presenting the facts. The welfare of the aggrieved is of paramount importance. Children and young people can never again suffer in the Church the wrongs that have occurred in the past. I am ready. to cooperate fully with an independent commission that will explain these issues “- the cardinal noted.
