The third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic began in the Brescia area of Lombardy in northern Italy, a medical advisor to the regional authorities said. Restrictions were tightened in the province.
There is clearly a third wave in Brescia, said Guido Bertolaso, adviser to the Lombardy authorities on the sanitary crisis, during a meeting of the regional council of the region. He said that alert status was raised in resuscitation units at local hospitals due to the large increase in infections and severe COVID-19 cases.
The head of the Lombardy authorities, Attilio Fontana, decided to tighten the restrictions in the entire province of Brescia and in many nearby municipalities, including Viadanica, Predore San Martino, Sarnico, Villongo, Castelli Caleppio, as well as in the towns of Credaro and Gandosso near Bergamo. The restrictions near Cremona have also been increased.
Therefore, this applies to the zone where it took place the strongest hit of the first wave of the epidemic last year.
Additional restrictions provide for the closure of kindergartens, primary schools and junior high schools, and the transition of companies and offices to remote work wherever possible.
