If this law is passed, and TVN’s license is not extended, it will be a nuclear option – former Law and Justice politician Ludwik Dorn said in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24. He referred to the draft amendment to the media law submitted by PiS MPs, which affects the independence of TVN. He said that perhaps PiS, by submitting this bill, “wants to kill two birds with one stone”.
Late in the evening, a group of Law and Justice MPs submitted to the Sejm a draft amendment to the Broadcasting Act. “The will of the legislator is that companies based in Poland cannot be controlled by entities from outside the European Economic Area” – it was written in the justification. Commentators agree that the changes are aimed at TVN’s independence. TVN24 is still waiting for the extension of the license by the National Broadcasting Council. The license expires on September 26. An application for its extension was submitted in February 2020.
Tvn24.pl report: DRAFT ANTI-TVN ACT AND A CONCESSION FOR TVN24 AND TVN
KRRiT claims that the problem lies in the “ownership situation” of the TVN group. The station’s management wrote in a statement that in 2015 the National Broadcasting Council accepted the entry of American capital into TVN.
Dorn: Maybe PiS wants to kill two birds with one stone
This case was mentioned in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 by the former speaker of the Sejm, former head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, and former Law and Justice politician Ludwik Dorn. – From the point of view of PiS’s political interests, it would be better not to submit this bill if it did not get a majority in the Sejm. But perhaps PiS figured it would get and kill two birds with one stone, he said.
– On the one hand, it will reduce the number of deputies loyal to Deputy Prime Minister Gowin, who contests this law, and on the other hand, it will push the anti-TVN law through and will have either a leverage or an elimination tool on this TV – he said.
In his opinion, a lot will depend on whether and what, if any, amendments will be proposed to the current bill. At the same time, he added that if the act were to be passed in the form currently proposed, it would be an “nuclear option”.
“It would also be against the US national security interest”
Later in the discussion, Dorn talked about how the possible adoption of this law may affect relations with the United States. US Trade Secretary Gina Raimondo, who met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development, Labor and Technology, Jarosław Gowin, wrote in social media that “measures restricting American investments in Poland will threaten the American and Polish economy.”
– American soldiers from Poland will not come out, it would also be contrary to the national security interest of the USA – assessed the former PiS politician.
– On the other hand, if you look at the history of various tensions, the Americans are masters of diplomatic and political undermining of governments that have exposed themselves to them. Therefore, I do not think that in political terms there will be a nuclear war (…) even a conventional war, but (perhaps – ed.) Such a silent guerrilla war combined with elements of the American-Polish Cold War – he said Ludwik Dorn.
