Piotr M., former rector of universities and former SLD MP, was questioned by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Krakow on Friday. According to tvn24.pl, prosecutor Jacek Para has heard five accusations concerning, inter alia, the transfer of funds from one of the universities to other accounts and extortion to the detriment of a private individual of more than two and a half million zlotys. The prosecutor’s office sent a motion to the court for a three-month temporary detention. The court granted this request.
Piotr M. was detained around noon. He was questioned at the District Prosecutor’s Office in Krakow. Prosecutor Jacek Para from the Krakow prosecutor’s office informed tvn24.pl that M. had heard five charges. – The first concerns acting to the detriment of the creditors of Małopolska Wyższa Szkoła im. Józef Dietl in Krakow. It consisted in hiding the school’s assets worth PLN 218,000 at risk of being seized in the course of ongoing enforcement proceedings, he said.
He added that Piotr M. was also accused of violating the labor rights of employees of Małopolska Wyższa Szkoła im. Józef Dietl “by failing to pay wages or paying them late” and “failure to pay obligatory social insurance contributions worth over PLN 1 million”.
Another allegation – as the prosecutor informed – concerns “causing significant damage to the University of Economy and Management in the amount of over PLN 500,000 by transferring funds from this school to other accounts and appropriating this money”.
Piotr M. was also accused of “failure to file a bankruptcy petition despite the conditions for submitting a petition from another entity”. Another accusation – as prosecutor Para has informed – concerns “extortion to the detriment of a private person of the amount of PLN 2 million 600 thousand by concluding a series of contracts with this person and misleading as to the actual allocation of this money”.
Prosecutor’s office for arrest, court decision
Piotr M. did not confess to the alleged acts. Prosecutor Para added in an interview with tvn24.pl that the alleged crimes are punishable by more than eight years in prison. He also informed that the prosecutor’s office sent a motion to the court for a three-month temporary detention of the suspect due to the high probability of committing the alleged offenses and fear of trial fraud.
On Friday evening, the District Court for Kraków Śródmieście considered the prosecutor’s request and placed Piotr M. in a three-month detention.
Piotr M. is a former member of the Democratic Left Alliance. During Leszek Miller’s government, he worked in the Ministry of the Interior and Administration. Later, he was the rector of the University of Management and Law. Helena Chodkowska in Warsaw, and later Małopolska Wyższa Szkoła im. Józef Dietl in Krakow. Privately, he is the husband of Magdalena Ogórek.
