Former cupboard minister and Liberal Democrat peer Shirley Williams – one of many “Gang of 4” who defected from Labour within the early Nineteen Eighties – has died aged 90.
Baroness Williams of Crosby – whose lengthy parliamentary profession started when she was elected an MP in 1964 – died within the early hours of Monday.
Lib Dem chief Sir Ed Davey mentioned: “That is heartbreaking for me and for our entire Liberal Democrat household.
“Shirley has been an inspiration to thousands and thousands, a Liberal lion and a real trailblazer.
“I really feel privileged to have identified her, listened to her and labored together with her. Like so many others, I’ll miss her terribly.”
