The Viking Grace ferry sailed from Turku, Finland to Stockholm. There were 331 passengers and 98 crew on board. On Saturday, as a result of strong gusts of wind, the vessel settled close to the shore near the marina of Mariehamn on the Aland Islands. The Finnish coastguard then informed that the lives of passengers and crew were not in danger.
According to the portal “Svenska Yle”, the ferry was towed to the port early Sunday morning. Passengers were evacuated.
The Viking Grace ferry ran aground
It turned out that the event did not cause a major failure. Viking Line, the ferry operator, announced on Sunday that Viking Grace will eventually transport some Finnish passengers to Turku, and another ferry – Amorella – will transport passengers from Sweden to Stockholm. “There is no security risk,” the release reads.
Viking Grace will undergo a thorough inspection upon arrival in Turku.
