A delegation of protesters entered the headquarters of the Law and Justice party, where it is to submit a “letter in defense of Polish agriculture”. The assembly is against the proposed changes to the protection of animals.
On Wednesday, around 9 a.m., farmers started protesting outside the headquarters of the Law and Justice party. There are, among others, representatives of Agrounia and the Polish Association of Fur Breeders.
– Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a historic moment, because for the first time farmers do not protest in front of the Sejm, do not protest in front of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, do not protest in front of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and are protesting in front of the headquarters of the party that prepared such a drastic act for Polish agriculture – emphasized Jacek Zarzycki, president of the Polish Association of Beef Cattle Breeders and Producers.
– Due to the introduction of this law, over 350,000 farms will lose about 30 percent of their income. Can we afford it? Ladies and Gentlemen, we cannot afford it. We will lose the best export markets for Polish beef, which is an export hit of Polish agriculture – said Zarzycki.
Around 10 a.m. a delegation of farmers entered the headquarters of the Law and Justice party.
The protesters have banners: “Leave our jobs”, “Who wants to slaughter Polish agriculture?”, “Five for animals is a betrayal of Poland”. Those gathered in front of the PiS headquarters also chanted the slogans “Kaczyński, traitor of the countryside” and “PiS, traitor of the Polish countryside” appeared on one of the flags held by farmers.
Letter of the Minister of Agriculture
On Wednesday afternoon, the Sejm is to deal with a draft regarding amendments to the Act on Animal Protection.
– I know that the law evokes emotions, but this is what the parliament is for, this is what the positions of individual parliamentary clubs are for, there will be a parliamentary debate to work out the best solution – said Elżbieta Witek, Speaker of the Sejm during the press briefing. The draft was submitted to the Sejm last week.
Onet.pl portal. announced on Tuesday that Minister Ardanowski sent a letter to PiS politicians in which he warned against the serious political consequences of adopting changes to the Animal Protection Act. According to the portal, Ardanowski wrote that the law would permanently alienate the rural electorate from PiS. Witek was asked on Wednesday if the letter of the minister of agriculture meant a conflict in the government over the project. – It has been known for a long time that Minister Ardanowski has a slightly different position than the rest of the PiS parliamentary caucus or the authorities. He expressed this his position. There will be a debate in the Sejm, I think that the parliament is the place where this political debate should take place – she said. – We have different positions, we approach this topic differently, I think that voting, which will be the final form of adopting this law, will be the best proof of how we approach this topic here in parliament. Let me remind you that, however, we represent very different political circles, said the Marshal of the Sejm. She added that the positions of other parliamentary clubs on this issue are known, at least in the media, and some of them support the project. – The debate will take place, there will be a vote, we will know what the majority is when it comes to this project – noted Witek.
High five for animals
The so-called five for animals announced by the president of PiS, Jarosław Kaczyński, provides, inter alia, a ban on breeding animals for fur, strengthening social control of the conditions in which animals are kept, a ban on the use of animals for entertainment and shows, a ban on permanent tethering and the definition of minimum pen dimensions, and restriction of ritual slaughter.
– This is an act that will surely be supported by all good people in Poland. I am convinced of this – said the president of Law and Justice.
The changes are opposed by the industry. According to poultry organizations reducing ritual slaughter will lead the industry to collapse.
“As representatives of the entire Polish poultry sector, we were surprised to receive the announcements of changes to the Animal Protection Act. Our concern and concern are particularly related to the announced changes to the introduction of provisions limiting religious slaughter. We believe that this type of solution may lead to the collapse of the Polish meat industry. , including poultry producers, breeders and farmers “- we could read in last week’s statement.
The introduction of the ban on ritual slaughter in Poland will result in the fact that plants that have so far performed this type of slaughter will have to give up this large part of their activity. For breeders, this means the loss of contracts and a reduction in production, which is already balancing on the edge of profitability – underlined.
According to poultry organizations, in the long run, this will result in a loss of financial liquidity and difficulties in repaying loans taken for the construction and modernization of farms. Reducing the demand from slaughter plants will have a negative impact not only on producers of live poultry, but also producers of hatching eggs, poultry hatcheries, feed producers and other so-called satellite for poultry branches of agricultural production.
