A tram route to Popowice is under construction in Wrocław. Workers have now dug a cannonball from the 18th or 19th century. Similar were used, inter alia, on warships.
The cannonball was found during earthworks carried out on Dmowskiego Street. There used to be artillery barracks in the area. For this reason, historical objects of this type have already been unearthed there in the past.
“As a rule, however, they were much smaller. Our ball is 280 mm, made of cast iron, weighs nearly 40 kg and is really in good condition. Similar cannons were used, among others, on ships” – informs Wrocławskie Inwestycje.
According to preliminary analyzes, the find dates back to the 18th or 19th century. There are many indications that it may be an object from the times of the Napoleonic Wars.
According to the procedures, the cannonball will end up in the hands of an archaeologist. After examination and preservation, it will be donated to the museum’s collection.
