Academic lecturer and author of scientific publications
Born in 1955 in Łódź, Zbigniew Rau is a lawyer by education – he graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Łódź. In 1980, he joined the Independent Self-governing Trade Union “Solidarity”.
As a doctor of law, he lectured at universities in Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, the USA and Australia, among others. In 1997, he became the head of the Department of Political and Legal Doctrines of the University of Lodz, a year later he became the rector’s representative for the branch of the University of Lodz in Tomaszów Mazowiecki.
From 2001, he headed the Department of Philosophy of Law and Ethics at the Salesian University of Economics and Management in Łódź. In 2005 he was awarded the title of professor of legal sciences. He also became the head of the Department of Political and Legal Doctrines at the University of Lodz, and in 2007 he became the head of the Center for Political and Legal Thought Alexis de Tocquevilee.
He is the author of numerous scientific publications concerning e.g. the thoughts of John Locke and Alexis de Tocqueville and the theory of liberalism. He was awarded, inter alia, With the Silver Cross of Merit and the medal of the National Education Commission.
Disputes with the Łódź sejmik and Hanna Zdanowska
In the presidential elections in 2005, he was a member of the Honorary Support Committee of Lech Kaczyński, and in the same year he obtained a senator’s mandate on behalf of PiS in the parliamentary elections. He then represented the Polish Parliament in the Parliamentary Assembly of Europe. He did not seek re-election in 2007.
In 2015, he became the voivode of Łódź. A year later, as a voivode, he revoked the resolution of the Łódź regional council on respecting the judgments of the then Constitutional Tribunal. They were not published by Prime Minister Beata Szydło in the Journal of Laws.
In December 2017, in connection with the so-called by the decommunization act, the voivode Rau gave the Zwycięstwa Square in Łódź (the name was in force since 1945) a new name – the Lech Kaczyński. In 2018, in turn, he annulled the resolution of the Łódź councilors who changed the name of Lech Kaczyński Square back to Zwycięstwa Square. The councilors then turned to the administrative court, which agreed with the city. The case ended in the Supreme Administrative Court, which also supported the sejmik.
In 2018, a few days before the elections for the president of Łódź, Rau, as voivode, appealed to the president of Łódź, Hanna Zdanowska, to resign from the elections, saying that “a legally convicted person cannot perform many professions in accordance with the law” (she was fined for certifying untruth). Zdanowska received 70 percent of the vote in the then elections, and Rau did not decide to terminate her mandate.
Controversial statements about “LGBT ideology” and “civilization of death”
In the last parliamentary elections in 2019, he was a candidate for PiS. During the campaign in the parliamentary elections, Rau became famous for his controversial statements. In a Facebook post he wrote, among other things, that he is against “LGBT ideology” as well as “the civilization of death”. He also argued that Europe, several decades after the commencement of the moral revolution, had legalized zoophiles, euthanized the weakest and the sick, postulates legalizing abortion until the end of pregnancy and postulates legalizing pedophilia. “One of the Swedish scientists even reported the need to consider the legalization of … cannibalism. Yes, under the guise of climate defense, you want to reduce a man not only to a sex toy, but to a simple meal” – wrote Rau. He also declared the preparation in the Sejm of “the assumptions of the law aimed at counteracting the sexualization of children” and claimed that PiS “is the last barrier that protects us and our families from the chaos that the left wants to treat us”.
In the elections, he obtained seven thousand votes running from the second place on the Łódź list. He obtained the mandate of a deputy and ended his term as voivode.
Until now, he chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee, and this year he became the chairman of the delegation of the Polish Parliament to the Parliamentary Assembly of Europe.
