Due to the falling rain, the water level in the pond rose, which swept the cranes’ nest. Two chicks were saved thanks to firefighters from Gostyń and Poniec (Greater Poland Voivodeship).
The intervention took place on Monday after 3 p.m. In Żytomiecko, two young cranes were trapped in a local pond. All indications are that after heavy rainfall, there was a significant increase in water and flooding of the cranes’ nest.
– The report showed that the nest with two chicks moved away from the shore by about 30 meters – says Cpt. Marcin Nyczka from the State Fire Service in Gostyń.
Firemen from the State Fire Service in Gostyń and volunteer firefighters from the Volunteer Fire Department Poniec were ordered to the site.
– The firemen went out by boat and fished out a nest and two chicks – informs Nyczka.
The nest and little cranes were pulled ashore. The firefighters, after consulting local biologists, decided to leave the young birds on the shore. It was a good decision – after a few moments the adult cranes found them.
The entire operation took about two hours for the firefighters.
